Education remains integral to Malaysia’s economic development agenda. According to Malaysian Educational Statistics, despite young people making up more than 23% of the population, the declining share of the young population between 2020 and 2030 marks severe implications for education and the future supply of professionals. Malaysia’s Ministry of Education continues to receive the highest budget allocation from the federal government, with RM82.1 billion allocated for education and higher education in the 2025 Budget.
Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) collaborated with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Federal Territories Department (JWP) and the Federal Territory Education Department of Labuan (JPWPL) to empower secondary education through its YSS Tuition Mission — Federal Territory of Labuan: 2024 SPM Workshop.
Spanning three days from 6 to 8 December 2024, the workshop, held at the Financial Park Convention Hall of Labuan, brought together 1,146 SPM candidates and 120 subject teachers from 12 secondary schools in Labuan for comprehensive knowledge-transfer sessions, tutoring and academic support. Subjects featured included Bahasa Melayu, English, Science, Mathematics, Malaysian History and Islamic Studies.
Aligning with the 5-Year National Progress Report on SDG 4 (Quality Education) and Malaysia’s Education Blueprint 2013–2025, the programme harmonises stakeholder engagement among government agencies and teaching communities to present quality and humane education access for young learners, including those from rural, sub-urban and underprivileged communities. This workshop continues the “YSS Tuition Mission” series, devised to strategically tackle knowledge disparity caused by existing socioeconomic gaps while promoting shared responsibility for education empowerment.
