Building stronger communities through active service and local partnerships.
Community Development is where YSS’s “eat, live and breathe” approach to volunteerism is most visible. Rather than short one-off visits, student volunteers stay embedded in host communities for one to two weeks at a time, working alongside residents on projects the community itself has identified as priorities.
The flagship vehicle for this pillar is the “Ini Warisan Kita” mission series. In 2024, 63 student volunteers spent two weeks across five villages in Kedah and Kelantan, contributing more than 765 volunteering hours to over 160 community-level projects — from digital transformation and Arduino basics for young learners, to a Pap smear and health screening programme, to organic waste composting for local agriculture — reaching almost 30,000 residents. Later that year, 100 volunteers spent two weeks in six regions of Sarawak, running 175 community projects that touched more than 40,636 lives, including health screenings with the Bintulu Health Department and a Night of Cultural Heritage celebration attended by the Deputy Prime Minister.
Every Community Development mission is built around YSS’s six volunteerism pillars — Unity and Community Empowerment, Education Enhancement, Climate Resilience, Health and Well-being, Digital Transformation, and Social Impact Mobilisation — so that even a two-week mission leaves behind infrastructure, skills, and relationships that outlast the volunteers’ stay.
